Have you been out in the field today?
General herping regulations in Indiana:
- It is illegal to collect or actively herp (as in pursue and capture) reptiles and amphibians in all state parks and state nature preserves without a special permit.
- It is illegal to collect or capture any threatened or endangered herps.
- There is a collection limit of four individuals of each species of non-protected herps.
- It is illegal to buy or sell any native herps in Indiana (even if they were obtained from out of state).
- It is illegal to collect Eastern Box Turtles.
- Snapping Turtes, Softshell Turtles, Bullfrogs, and Green Frogs are all considered game species and are thus governed by slightly different rules.
- A permit is required to release any wild-caught herps afterthey have been in captivity for more than 30 days.
For those 17 years old and under:
- No license is required to collect or capture reptiles and amphibians outside of state parks and preserves.
For those 18 years old and older:
- A valid hunting or fishing license is required to collect or capture herps anywhere in Indiana.
